Zizzi - Cambridge, Bene't Street Restaurant

Overview

Tucked along the historic lanes of Cambridge, Zizzi - Cambridge, Bene't Street at 16 Bene't St, Cambridge CB2 3QN, United Kingdom, is the kind of Italian restaurant you stumble upon once and then keep returning to. Just a short walk from King’s Parade and the Fitzwilliam Museum, this location feels perfectly placed for a relaxed lunch after sightseeing or a cosy dinner before an evening stroll through the colleges.

I’ve visited several times over the past year, both on busy weekends and quieter midweek evenings, and the experience has been consistently solid. The atmosphere strikes that sweet spot between lively and comfortable. Exposed brick, warm lighting, and rustic wooden tables create a setting that feels casual but thoughtful. On my last visit, I booked ahead online-a simple process that took less than two minutes-and the table was ready right on time, even though the restaurant was nearly full.

The menu leans heavily into classic Italian comfort food, with a modern twist. Think stone-baked pizzas, creamy pastas, and generous sharing boards. I once ordered the Rustica pepperoni pizza, and what stood out wasn’t just the crisp base but the balance of flavors: spicy pepperoni, melted mozzarella, and a subtle tomato sauce that didn’t overpower. According to the UK’s National Health Service, a balanced diet can include pizza and pasta when portions and ingredients are considered carefully, and Zizzi does offer lighter options, including salads and plant-based dishes. Their vegan lentil ragu, for example, is rich and satisfying without feeling heavy.

One detail I appreciate is the clear labeling of allergens and dietary preferences. The Food Standards Agency in the UK emphasizes transparency in allergen information, and here it’s handled confidently. Staff members I’ve spoken with were knowledgeable about gluten-free bases and dairy alternatives, and they double-checked with the kitchen without hesitation. That level of attentiveness builds trust, especially for diners with specific dietary needs.

Service has generally been attentive without being intrusive. During one particularly busy Saturday evening, our server managed multiple tables smoothly, checking in at just the right moments. Drinks arrived promptly, and when a friend’s pasta was slightly cooler than expected, it was replaced quickly and with a genuine apology. These small actions say a lot about how a restaurant values its guests.

Zizzi as a brand has long been recognized across the UK casual dining scene, and its consistent reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor and Google reflect that steady reputation. While individual experiences can vary depending on timing and staffing levels, the Cambridge location maintains a strong standing among local Italian eateries. On peak university weekends, it’s wise to reserve ahead, as walk-ins may face a short wait.

The dessert menu deserves a mention too. The chocolate brownie, served warm with gelato, is indulgent without tipping into overly sweet territory. I’ve also tried their tiramisu, which delivered the expected coffee richness and creamy layers. Pairing dessert with a cappuccino rounded off the meal perfectly, especially on colder evenings when Cambridge’s cobbled streets feel extra brisk.

Pricing is in line with other casual Italian restaurants in central Cambridge. It’s not the cheapest option in town, but considering the location, portion sizes, and overall experience, it feels fair. Students and families alike seem comfortable here, and the flexible menu-ranging from sharing platters to individual mains-makes it easy to tailor your visit.

Of course, like any busy city-centre restaurant, noise levels can rise during peak hours. If you’re after a quiet, intimate dinner, an earlier booking might suit you better. Still, for most occasions-birthdays, casual dates, group dinners-this Bene’t Street spot delivers reliable Italian flavors in a welcoming setting.

In our opinion the prices were rather high considering the size of the meals. However the meals were very tasty and we enjoyed them. We were served by a young lady called Nikola. She was lovely, very attentive and checked in on us to make sure our meals were ok and if we required anything. Could not fault her service. Also like the added touch of some nibbles with our drinks before our food arrived. It did not take long before we received our meals.

Enjoyable lunch stop to escape the bustle of the busy streets. Recommend the cherry sour cocktail. Spicy king prawn has a nice balance of heat and cream. Kids enjoyed a 3 course menu with veg and pasta crisps or bread followed by pasta and ice cream. Plenty of seating so didn't need a reservation. Like that you can build up order using QR code as you dine then settle total at the end.

We were very happy with the food and the service. Our waitress, Somya, was friendly and attentive, and the food was served very quickly. We were very pleased with everything.

Visited on a busy Sunday and had a fantastic experience. Even though the restaurant was packed, the service was smooth and attentive. Nikola was amazing, she welcomed us with complimentary pasta crisps at the start and surprised us at the end with warm, delicious hot chocolate. Such thoughtful touches made the whole visit feel extra special. We had a really great time and will definitely be back.

Really lovely Zizzi, great stop off for a quick meal. Being able to order online at our own pace was fantastic, although I wasn't able to pay online as I couldn't add my Unidays student discount to the site. My only points for improvement would be the uniforms - staff were wearing plain beige t shirts which made them difficult to spot amongst the diners - and that the calamari I ordered was rather tasteless. I'm unsure as to whether I was missing some sort of spice or costing, or whether that's just how it was, but found it difficult to flag down a staff member to ask due to the aforementioned uniform situation.

The waiter Alfie was so lovely, best service of my life. Food came so quickly and the drinks were perfect. I hope he gets a promotion!

Lovely place. It was busy but all run really smoothly particularly for the excellent coordination of the staff. Good food beautifully presented. Swift and efficient staff. We want to praise friendly and helpful SOMYA. She made our meal a truly amazing experience. The only downfall is the undemocratic attack towards cash. This will stop me from repeating the experience.
